The story begins with two fourteen-year-old boys, and Neckbone , who venture out to a remote island on the river. There, they discover a peculiar sight: a boat high up in the branches of a tree, left behind by a massive flood. Their wonder is cut short when they realize they aren’t alone. Living in the boat is a charismatic, enigmatic drifter named Mud (played by Matthew McConaughey).

Mud is a man of superstition and intense loyalty, wearing a "lucky" shirt and carrying a pistol for protection. He reveals he is a fugitive on the run after killing a man in Texas to protect the love of his life, (Reese Witherspoon). Despite the danger, the boys—driven by Ellis’s idealistic belief in true love—agree to help Mud. They begin smuggling him food and parts to repair the boat so he can escape with Juniper.
