Born Şakir Deniz in Ağrı, Turkey, Şakiro was a master of the dengbêj —a traditional Kurdish singer-storyteller who performs epic tales and laments without the accompaniment of musical instruments. A member of the Redki tribe, he spent his life preserving the oral history of his people through song. After a life of travel and performance, he passed away in İzmir in 1996.
