The film follows a young man named Aleksei who begins his working life at a large factory. He initially falls under the influence of a criminal gang (hooligans). Realizing his mistake, he breaks ties with the group and, with the support of his fellow factory workers, enters into a "fierce and uncompromising struggle" against his former criminal associates.

Despite being completed in 1963, the movie was "put on the shelf" by Soviet censors for three years. It did not reach theaters until April 12, 1966.
